IPA has recently begun using its scope-based modeling approach for turnaround expense costs. The approach is based on our database of 350 turnarounds and the extensive data collected for each turnaround. By collecting specific scope information and developing an algorithm for weighting different types of scope, we have developed a statistical model than can explain 97 percent of the variability in the data (as shown in the figure below). The model includes a set of specific characteristics (scope is the primary characteristic) and practices (level of planning is the primary practice) that are used to predict turnaround expense costs. This powerful tool is being used to benchmark turnaround expense costs for each turnaround we evaluate.
