ABOUT THE ROLE
The Exploration and Production (E&P) Research Analyst focuses on developing analytical products (e.g., machine learning models) that support our benchmarking business and targeted research to help clients in the oil and gas sector. They are also tasked with supporting the creation of new products (e.g., applications) that drive the company forward and help our clients navigate a changing world. We have an opening in our Ashburn, VA, USA, office for a Research Analyst for the Exploration and Production Business. This role is within an exciting and established area of the company in which we leverage our expertise and unmatched data to advise our clients on the effect of project practices on capital project performance and work collaboratively with them to support them as they work to improve. The successful candidate will have the potential to become a consultant and trusted advisor in specialization in the Oil and Gas Industry.

IPA seeks candidates for the E&P Research Analyst position with strong analytical skills and intellectual curiosity who are looking to contribute as a thought leader. The candidate’s interest in studying project practices that affect project outcomes is critical. Aptitude for and demonstrated skills to be a successful analyst and consultant include an ability to connect real life with data and vice versa, knowing when to ask more questions.
DAY IN THE LIFE
The general responsibilities of the Research Analyst role include:
- Working on studies related to the Oil and Gas Industry focusing on cost and schedule effectiveness
- Collaborating with cross-functional groups within IPA and working directly with clients to address their questions and needs
- Analyzing data, conducting research, and developing new products
- Interfacing with clients
- Developing reports and presentations with insight and a customer focus
- Delivering verbal (including virtual delivery) feedback and presentations
- Working directly with capital project teams to improve business competitiveness
E&P Research Analysts must have excellent written and oral communication skills, display the interpersonal skills needed to develop and maintain relationships at senior levels with client companies, and have a demonstrated aptitude for learning new concepts and applying them quickly. The position requires solid analytical skills, a proven ability to turn an abstract concept or idea into something actionable, a track record of finding creative solutions to complex problems, and flexibility in thought and/or approach (as opposed to a rigid perspective). The successful candidate will work well in teams, but also be capable of managing multiple projects independently. Experience in applied research or consulting a plus.
Education and Experience
A degree in engineering or related field. We’re looking for backgrounds in energy, renewables, petroleum, civil or chemical engineering, economics, or allied fields.
This position will involve approximately 10 to 15 percent travel.
